Ross Geller (Character) -Friends

Ross is a paleontologist and has a Ph.D. from Columbia, frequently referring to himself as "Dr. Ross Geller", though he states he gave up a career in basketball. Ross is noted for being geeky, charming, love lost, witty, and somewhat artistic, showing an interest in the Metropolitan Museum of Art when he coaches Joey Tribbiani on the works of Monet when Joey tries to impress his current girlfriend Charlie. Ross has had a crush on Rachel Green since high school, although he founded the "I Hate Rachel Green" club with his friend, Will Culvert, who hated Rachel as she used to pick on him, due to his inability to express himself, causing him to make poor choices about how to handle his feelings. Ross seems to keep the group together.
Ross is the older brother of Monica Geller, and is frequently shown to be their parents' favorite. The two siblings are extremely competitive as they tell the others that, as children, they used to take part in a football match for the Geller Cup every Thanksgiving. This ended in its sixth year, after Monica "accidentally" broke Ross's nose. They also tell Rachel about how they used to wrestle as children and had various complications in their relationship, such as Ross having a recurring nightmare that the then-overweight Monica would eat him. Ross and Monica are half-Jewish, but see themselves as at least cultural Jews, with Ross taking a more active role in wanting to teach his son about the faith.

Ross often came into conflict with his close friend, Phoebe Buffay. His rationality and Phoebe's eccentricity led to conflict over the theories of evolution, gravity, and whether or not Phoebe's dead mother was reincarnated as a cat. It was also revealed that Phoebe mugged Ross during her homeless years (stealing a copy of the comic book Science Boy that Ross had created) when they were teenagers, although Phoebe was slightly cheered about the discovery as she had always felt like an outsider to the group as she lacked the longer-term connections of the others. The two were also roommates for a few weeks when a fire forced Phoebe to move into Chandler and Monica's apartment as Phoebe wanted to give the newly-engaged couple some privacy. Also on a 'flash back' episode, they were alone and at the bar, and they ended up kissing, but things bumped into them, like light, and pool balls.
Ross's best friend since college is Chandler Bing. He is shown to have had some old memories such as a band with Chandler called Way/No Way and blamed him when he was caught smoking marijuana in college. Ross is also close friends with Joey Tribbiani and helps him with movie and stage auditions. He kisses Joey once in order to help him practice a role as a gay man only to find out that he had already done the audition and that he had not got the role. They also briefly try to cut Chandler out of their friendship group after he ignores them. Towards the end of the series, however, Ross and Joey are seen to become closer friends, often seen hanging out together after Chandler gets married. At one point, Ross tells Rachel Green that Joey is his best friend, to which Rachel replies, "I thought Chandler was your best friend?" Ross begins explaining, "Well, Chandler's my oldest friend", but refuses to discuss it further.

Ross is said to be a former practitioner of karate and pronounces it "ka-raa-tay", for which the others make fun of him. He claims that Unagi is a state of total awareness, despite his friends repeatedly telling him (correctly) that unagi is Japanese freshwater eel. He ridicules Rachel and Phoebe's self-defense class and surprises them to demonstrate that they lack Unagi. Rachel and Phoebe later surprise Ross and overpower him, however (then Rachel mockingly implies that her practice is "Salmon Skinroll" as opposed to Unagi). In a flashback episode, Ross is practicing karate, claiming that it was his means of releasing his frustration at not having sex with his wife. Ross is however shown to be an at least adequate fighter after fighting with a mugger (off-screen) as he stole Ross, Chandler and two bullies' personal belongings. He also attempts to punch Joey after being given a "free shot" but Joey ducks and Ross hits a lamp post.
Ross has two children. The elder, Ben, is Ross and Carol's son, conceived while the couple were married, and born at the end of season 1. Ben lives with Carol and Susan and his name came from a name tag on an overall seen in that episode. Ben is shy at first, but Rachel transforms him into a mischievous prankster. He was played by Cole Sprouse.
Ross's younger child (born later in the series) is Emma. She is conceived during a one night stand and lives with Ross and Rachel until Rachel moves back in with Joey. She remains there until Ross and Rachel get back together in the series finale. Emma got her name because it was what Monica wanted her daughter to be named but she lets Rachel use it.

Chandler Bing (Character) -Friends

Chandler Muriel Bing was born on April 8, 1968, to an erotic novelist mother and a cross-dressing Las Vegas star and is of Scottish and Swedish ancestry. Chandler's parents announced their divorce to him over Thanksgiving dinner when he was nine years old, an event which causes him to refuse to celebrate the holiday in his adulthood. Chandler was Ross Geller's roommate in college. Chandler met Ross's sister, Monica Geller, and her friend, Rachel Green, while celebrating Thanksgiving with the Geller family during his first year at college. On a tip from Monica, Chandler later moved to Apartment #19 in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, across the hall from Monica and her roommate Phoebe Buffay. In apartment #19, Chandler's roommate became Joey Tribbiani .

Chandler is noted for his wise-cracks and sardonic attitude, which provides a defense mechanism. His most famous phrase is the rhetorical question "Could I be any more...?" and is used on the show as a source of humor repeatedly, primarily mocking from the other friends.
Some of Chandler's humor includes him describing Rachel's attempts to stop him smoking by throwing away every cigarette he puts into his mouth as "the least fun game ever", quoting A.A. Milne as having said "Get out of my chair, dillhole!" in an attempt to persuade Joey to vacate the chair he had been sitting in, and his insistence that his surname (Bing) is Gaelic for "thy turkey's done". His humorous conversations with Phoebe ranged from why Donald Duck wears a towel when getting out of the shower, to why there isn't a superhero called "Goldman" (inspired by Spider-Man). When he and Ross are trying to pick up women, he would be referred to as 'The Funny One'.

Throughout the show, Chandler claims he started using humor as a defense mechanism when his parents broke up which causes Monica to remark "So if your parents hadn't got divorced, you'd be able to answer a question like a normal person?" referring to his constant joke making. He also tends to make jokes when he is nervous. In fact, when Phoebe dates a psychologist named Roger, he states that Chandler's behavior is textbook of someone whose parents split up while he was still a young child. At one point, the friends challenge him to not make fun of them for an entire week as his New Year's Resolution; this proves difficult when, among other things, Ross starts dating a woman named Elizabeth Hornswoggle. He breaks his resolution by sarcastically saying, "And, Ross, Hornswoggle? What, are you dating a character from Fraggle Rock?"
Until Chandler moves in with Monica, he shares an apartment with his joint best friend Joey Tribbiani. Chandler and Joey's apartment is an important focal point for the series as one of the few meeting areas of the gang. The two form a close and enduring friendship, and get into many humorous situations. Their adventures include: losing Ross's infant son (Ben) on a bus; Chandler's dismay at Joey building an "entertainment unit" which is so big, it partially covers their bedroom doors; buying a chick and a duck (affectionately named "The Chick and The Duck"); and replacing their dining table with a foosball table. A famous running gag suggests they are like an old married couple when they argue, with Chandler usually assuming the wife's role. Although in one episode when Joey's new roommate, Janine, has redecorated - Joey takes the more woman-like role of their argument with comments such as "Why would you say that? It's just mean!" and "It's not what you said; it was the way you said it", due to Janine's feminine qualities rubbing off on Joey
At Ross and Emily's wedding in London, Monica and Chandler slept together and began dating. Monica and Chandler try keeping their relationship secret, not sure how the others will react but eventually they all find out.
Joey discovers minor details about their subsequent lies after their first weekend away together, Rachel overhears a phone conversation, Phoebe and Ross see them together from Ross's new apartment across the street. Joey kept the secret at first, after Rachel and Phoebe found out about it, the two girls tried provoking them to admit that they were in a relationship. Correspondingly, Monica and Chandler try getting them to admit that they knew and a battle broke out (with Joey as the go-between). This ended with Phoebe and Chandler supposedly intending to sleep together, but Chandler cracked and admitted his love for Monica, which she returned.

Joey Tribbiani (Character) -Friends

Joey comes from an Italian American family of eight children. His father, for whom Joey is named, is a pipefitter. Joey has seven sisters: Mary Therese, Mary Angela (with whom Chandler fooled around at Joey's birthday party), Dina, Gina, Tina, Veronica, and Cookie. Joey is from, and was presumably born in, Queens, New York. As a child, he was extremely accident prone. He also had an imaginary friend, Maurice, who was a space cowboy.
Joey is portrayed as promiscuous and dim-witted, but very loyal and protective of his friends. As a struggling actor, he is constantly looking for work. He was ordained as a minister in "The One with the Truth About London", and officiated at both Monica and Chandler and Phoebe and Mike's weddings. It is revealed in The One After "I Do" that Joey has size seven feet, which he is secretive and defensive about. He also has a soft toy penguin named Hugsy (his "bedtime penguin pal"), whom he is very fond of and does not like to share. He also doesn't like sharing food and has difficulty with simple mathematics (evidenced by his using a calculator to add together 500 and 500). In sports, Joey likes the Los Angeles Dodgers,New York Yankees, and briefly the New York Mets in baseball, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks in basketball, New York Giants and New York Jets in football, and the New York Rangers in hockey.
Joey is characterized as a simple-minded but good-natured womanizer who loves food. He particularly loves meatball sub sandwiches. When asked if he would give up sex or food he had trouble deciding and kept blurting out sex or food, eventually yelling "I want girls on bread!". In The One with the Ride Along, he appears to be saving Ross from a putative gunshot, when it was actually his meatball sandwich that he was trying to save; it was just near Ross. He also loves the "Joey Special" — two pizzas. He is something of an idiot savant in general, but capable of good ideas when the situation arises; this is alluded to in the episode "The One Where Ross Dates a Student", when Chandler, referring to Joey, says "A hot girl's at stake and suddenly he's Rain Man" when Joey suggested Ross work out who among his students called him the 'hottie of the paleontology department' by comparing the handwriting of the note to the handwriting in the class essays. In another example, Joey made up an anecdote referred to as the "Europe story" or the "magic story"; apparently, anyone who hears it will immediately want to have sex with the teller. This was proven to be effective in "The One With the Videotape", when it was discovered that Rachel successfully used the story on Ross (although, as Ross was aware of the story beforehand, the mere fact of Rachel using it would have been enough to imply that she was hitting on him). He is also clever at other times, for example, in "The One With Ross’s Teeth", while the other five friends sat around at Central Perk pondering why their bosses don't like them, it was Joey who pointed out, "Maybe it's because you're all sitting around here at 11:30 on a Wednesday."
Joey is extremely promiscuous with women, often relying on his catchphrase pickup line "How you doin'?". In "The One with Monica's Thunder", Chandler asks Joey, "You've had a lot of sex, right?", to which Joey replies, "Today? Some ... not a lot." He sleeps with many of the interns and extras on shows on which he works (Although he was prepared to decline an offer to have sex with a casting agent because he wanted to be cast for his acting skills rather than his sexual performance; his integrity prompted the agent to give him a bigger part than the one he originally auditioned for, but he still slept with her to get it). He has apparently been sexually active for a very long time; he undid a 16-year-old girl's bra when he was nine, slept with his teacher in the seventh grade, and he had a wild spring break when he was 13. However, in the episode "The One with Ross's Sandwich", Chandler and Monica attempted to cover up their fling by claiming Joey was a sex-addict, and Joey was outraged at the accusation. He is very charming to all women but can never seem to get into a committed relationship.

Phoebe Buffay lived in uptown New York until when she was twelve her mother killed herself and she lived a life on the street. Previous to that her father had abandoned her, her twin sister Ursula, and her mother. Early on in the series a grandmother is shown but later dies.

Phoebe was not really the main character in any episodes until late in the show. Early on she had a relationship with David the "science guy" who had to move to Minsk for scientific study.

Throughout the show Phoebe was always involved in strange situations. Unable to have their own children, Phoebe's brother and his wife ask her to be a surrogate mother. Reluctant at first, she agrees and ends up giving birth to their triplets.

Phoebe has a twin sister names Ursula. Ursula, like Phoebe is quirky and a little air-headed but unlike her she seems heartless and at times uncaring.

Phoebe discovered in the third season that the woman whom she thought was her mother was infact her birth mother's best friend.

Phoebe did not find a new serious love interest until season 8, Mike, a unemployed lawyer who played piano on the side. It seemed as though everything would be wonderful until she found out that Mike never wanted to get married and the two ended their relationship.

After the break up with Mike, David the science guy returns from Minsk and confesses that he is still in love with Phoebe. Phoebe who is desperately trying to get over Mike but is obviously still in love with him tries hard to fall in love with David again. David, sensing that Phoebe is not over Mike, decides to propose to Phoebe in hopes that marrying him will help her forget Mike. Just as David is about to propose Mike shows up and proposes to Phoebe instead. Shockingly, Phoebe says no. She does not want a proposal from Mike, she just wants to know that someday they will be married. She ends it with poor heartbroken David and rekindles her and Mikes relationship.

During season 10 Mike and Phoebe are married and in the series finale they discuss wanting to have children.

Briefly known as "Princess Consuela Bananahammock".

Monica Geller (Character) -Friends

Monica Geller is the younger sister of Ross, best friend of Rachel and future wife of Chandler.

In her childhood, Monica was extremely overweight, as shown in flashbacks during the course of the show. She shed the pounds after one Thanksgiving, after Chandler (who was Ross' roommate in college at the time) called her fat.

In the first series, Monica was a chef at a restaurant called Iridium. She lived in Greenwich Village in an apartment which she sublet from her grandmother. Initially, she shared the apartment with Phoebe, who moved out after she became concerned that her friendship with Monica would be strained due to Monica's obsessive need to be clean. When her old friend Rachel arrived at Central Perk after running out on her wedding, Monica allowed Rachel to stay with her.

Monica didn't have many relationships in Series One. She went out with Paul (The Wine Guy) briefly in the pilot, but dumped him after he lied to her to get her to sleep with him. She also went out with Alan, but became disillusioned when her friends seemed to love him more than she did herself. There was also Ethan, but that ended when Monica discovered that he was in fact a senior in high school, not in college as he had originally told her. Also in Series One, it is learned that Monica believed that her parents loved Ross more than her. It also seemed that Judy Geller, Monica's mother, was overly critical of her daughter, but didn't realise it. This became a recurring theme in the series.

In Series Two, Monica was promoted at her restaurant, before quickly being fired for accepting a gift from a food distributor. She remained unemployed for the remainder of the second series. Monica then met Richard Burke, an old family friend. Even though Richard was 21 years her senior, she quickly fell in love with him. Throughout the second series, Monica and Richard had a strong and happy relationship, but it ended in the series finale when Richard said to Monica that he didn't wish to have anymore children, even though Monica was desperate to have her own family. At the beginning of Series Three, Monica struggled to cope without Richard, only finding relief when her father told her that Richard was having just as a rough time as she was. The couple very briefly reconciled, after Monica bumped into Richard at a video rental store. But, as they wanted different things, Monica knew that it would be pointless to get into another serious relationship with him. Monica got a job at a 1950s-themed diner, where she had to wear a blonde wig, rollerskates and large fake breasts. It was at this diner where she met millionaire Pete Becker, who continuously asked Monica to go out with him. When she agreed, he took her to Rome for pizza. But try as she might, Monica failed to find any romantic feeling for Pete, until she kissed him for the first time. However, their romance was short-lived after Pete began competing for the Ultimate Fighting Champion title. Being unable to watch Pete get hurt, Monica ended the relationship.

It was in Series Four when Monica began a short-lived catering business with Phoebe. She is also chosen to be a food critic at the Chelsea Reporter. She wrote a scathing review of a restaurant named Alessandro's and is offered the position as head chef. Unfortunately, her colleagues weren't too fond of her, given her review and that three of them happened to be children of the previous head-chef. Monica was relentlessly picked on, until it was suggested that she hire Joey solely for the purpose of firing him, to make her colleagues realise who was the boss. The plan worked, and her relationship with them gradually improved.

It was at Ross' disastrous wedding to Emily, in the Series Four finale, that Monica and Chandler slept together. Shortly afterwards, they fell in love and tried to keep their relationship secret from their friends. Eventually, everybody found out. At the end of Series 5, Monica and Chandler decided to get married in Las Vegas, but after seeing Ross and Rachel drunkenly leave the chapel after eloping, they backed out. Instead, they moved in together at Monica's apartment and Rachel moved in with Phoebe.

In the Series Six finale, Richard came to see Monica at her restaurant and revealed that he was still in love with her and wanted to marry her. Thinking that Chandler would never want to get married, Monica considered leaving him, but instead tricked Chandler into thinking that she had left and surprised him with a proposal.

Series Seven saw Monica and Chandler organise the wedding, and they eventually got married in the series finale, even though they were almost upstaged by the news that Rachel was pregnant with Ross' baby.

At the end of Series Eight, whilst Rachel was in labour, Monica decided that she wanted to try and have a baby. But, after trying many times, Monica and Chandler had a fertility test and it was discovered that it was unlikely that the couple would ever have children naturally.

So, in Series Nine, they decided to adopt. Eventually, a girl named Erica chose them to adopt her baby. In terms of employment, Chandler was relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma and Monica contacted a job-hunter about restaurant openings. It was then when she was offered the job as head-chef at Javu, an upmarket restaurant in Manhattan. Monica accepted, meaning that she had to remain in New York.

It was in Series Ten that Monica and Chandler decided to leave the city and buy a house in the suburbs to raise their child, much to the dismay of their friends. Erica also gave birth to twins, even though it was originally thought that she was having only one baby.

In the last ever episode, Monica and Chandler brought home the twins, named Erica and Jack, and moved out of their apartment. They left to have one last cup of coffee with their friends.

Rachel Green (Character) -Friends

When the friends first met Rachel Green, she was young, naive and spoiled. That fateful day she had just narrowly escaped from marrying Barry Farber. Rachel's explination for why she didn't marry Barry was, "Because I was more turned on by a gravy boat," Monica ended up taking Rachel under her wing after her rich father cut her off. Rachel was forced to cut up all of her credit cards. Rachel tried to find a job but was laughed at at every single interview she attended. Clearly not phased, Rachel found a job at Central Perk, where all the friends hung out. She would have this job for another couple of years.

Ross, Monica's elder brother, who had been in love with Rachel for many years, finally got up the courage to ask if she'd like to go out some time. Rachel said yes, but nothing ever became of it. Nothing happened between Ross and Rachel for a very long time. Ross pined for her for a year, but even when coaxed by friends Chandler and Joey to just tell her how he felt, Ross remained adamant that Rachel would reject his advances.

Rachel went on to date a number of guys that only made Ross more and more jealous. One was Paulo, but their relationship was mostly sexual, according to Rachel. At the end of Series one, it appeared that Ross had been about to confess his love for Rachel, but he was called away at the last minute. During Rachel's birthday party, Chandler accidently let slip that Ross was in love with Rachel. This shocking revelation caused Rachel to question her feelings for Ross, and in the end she ran to the airport to confront him about it, only to see him walking out with another woman on his arm.

By the end of Series one, Rachel had settled down and made a new life for herself with the help of her friends, particularly Monica. However, the revelation that Ross was seeing another woman, Julie, caused Rachel to become moody and aggresive during Series two. She despised Julie and would talk about her constantly with Monica and Phoebe behind the other woman's back. Finally, Ross found out about Rachel's feelings for him and confronted her. After a heated arguement, Ross stormed out of Central Perk, only to return seconds later and share a passionate kiss with Rachel. This marked the start of their long, turbulent on and off relationship. After this it seemed like they would finally begin their relationship together. However, Chandler and Joey encouraged Ross to make a list of all the good and bad things about Rachel and Julie, as he was torn between the two. Rachel of course found out about the list and refused to speak to Ross. For a while it seemed like Rachel was over Ross, until the night where she and the other friends watched the video of Monica and Rachel's prom, where Rachel's date never showed, and Ross was encouraged to go with her, despite his reluctance. However, at the last minute Rachel's date arrived and they left, leaving Ross heartbroken. This caused Rachel to forgive Ross and the two of them finally started their relationship.

For the rest of Series two and up until mid-way Series three, Ross and Rachel were a very happy couple. Then, the jealousy started involving Rachel and her new work collegue Mark. Rachel had gotten a new job at Bloomingdales and was working with closely Mark, much to Ross's fury. He was also annoyed by the fact that Rachel was working so much that he hardly got to spend time with her. Ross would always try to make a point that he was worried about Rachel's growing friendship with Mark until finally the two had an argument after Ross came unannounced to her office when she was completely stressed out. Rachel said to Ross that maybe they needed to take a break, but neither confirmed that they had officially split up. Ross slept with another woman that same night, and the news quickly spread, and Rachel found out. Heartbroken, Rachel split up with Ross and the two of them were sworn enemies until the Series Three finale, in which the friends went up to stay at a beach house, along with Ross's new girlfriend Bonnie, who used to shave her head but now had a full head of hair. Rachel, clearly not over Ross, began to get jealous of Bonnie and encouraged her to shave her head again. She and Ross kissed one night, meaning that Ross had to chose between Rachel and the newly-bald Bonnie. Ross chose Rachel, who had written up page after page of what she wanted in their relationship and what had already happened between them. Ross, of course, didn't read it and fell asleep. However, after having the fact that he cheated constantly rubbed in his face by Rachel, he finally lost it and said the ever immortal phrase that would go onto be one of the most frequently used quotes on the show - "WE WERE ON A BREAK!"

Ross and Rachel were not a couple again after that until the end of the show. Rachel instead fell for another man, Joshua, whom she met after being demoted at her job in Bloomingdales. She and Joshua did go out for a while, however when Ross announced that he was engaged to new girlfriend Emily, Rachel became jealous and suggested to Joshua that they get married too, which scared him away. Feeling that it would be too hard to watch her ex-boyfriend get married, Rachel decided not to attend the wedding and instead stayed in New York with Phoebe, who was pregnant with her brother's triplets and unable to fly. After the other friends left for London, Rachel announced to Phoebe that she was going too, in a desperate attempt to explain her feelings to Ross before it was too late. Phoebe tried to discourage her but Rachel was adamant that he would feel the same. However, on arrival she had a change of heart and watched the wedding, only to hear Ross say her name instead of Emily's at the altar, during a cliff-hanger season finale.

Ross and Emily were over before Series five had really begun. Rachel confessed to Ross that she was still in love with him but he didn't return her feelings. The two went on as friends after that. Rachel got a new job at Ralph Lauren. During a trip to Vegas, Ross and Rachel, stuck in their hotel room, got very drunk and accidently got married. Ross, not wanting to have three failed marriages, lied to Rachel and told her that they were no longer a married couple. However, it seemed that he still had romantic feelings for Rachel. However, Rachel soon discovered that Ross had failed to get an annulment and was furious. It was a definite blow to their relationship.

In Series 7, Rachel continued to live with Joey and was eventually chosen to be Monica's maid of honour. At the wedding, it was implied in a shock cliff-hanger that Rachel was pregnant, and not Monica, whom Phoebe had believed as the one who was with child. The baby turned out to be Ross's, as Rachel had had a one night stand with him.

In Series Eight, Rachel discovered that Joey had fallen in love with her after the two went on an unofficial date. He suggested that Rachel move in with Ross, so that he would be able to help when the baby arrived. When Joey finally revealed his feelings, Rachel politely rejected them and the two were awkward around each other for a while, before things finally settled back to normal.

Whilst in hospital giving birth to her baby, Rachel thought that Joey proposed to her, when in actual fact he was simply picking up Ross's ring from the ground. She said yes, even though she didn't really want to get married to Joey. Joey later told a shocked Rachel that he hadn't meant to propose and that the ring was Ross'.

Rachel and Ross continued to live together with the baby, whom Rachel named Emma, before Rachel moved out after living with Ross became too much. However, they continued to raise Emma together, even though they were not a couple.

In Series ten, Rachel announced that she had gotten a job offer, but the job was in Paris, much to Ross's shock. He did everything he could to get her to stay, until he saw how happy she was at the prospect of working in Paris and decided to let her go. However, in the Series finale and the very last episode of the show, Ross realized he loved her and went with Phoebe to the airport in an attempt to catch up with her. Rachel rejected him, then realized that she loved him too and returned to the apartment. The two embraced passionately, and were finally a real couple at last.

Since the end of the show, it has been implied in the show Joey that Rachel and Ross got married and settled down
